Brianne Tju Talks Serums, Details Her Transformation on Netflix’s ‘Uglies’
Netflix’s Uglies premiered on September 13, and it’s safe to say the dystopian fantasy film based on the Scott Westerfeld novel has some hard-hitting, real-life messages. Set in a futuristic world that imposes cosmetic surgery at 16, the film stars Joey King alongside Brianne Tju, who portrays “Shay,” a teen trying to escape her “pretty” operation. As Tju tells us, while the plot may seem far-out, the role came with some very real feelings regarding Hollywood, looks, and transformations.
What was the most exciting part about working on Uglies?
I was really excited to work with Joey, because I’ve always admired her so much. Becoming friends with Joey, Chase, and Keith outside of work was probably my favorite part of making this movie. I was also excited to step into Scott Westerfeld’s world; I had read Uglies as a kid and was so enamored and intrigued.
Can you share any behind-the-scenes secrets regarding glam from on-set?
I was honestly so shook from all the additions they added to Shay for her “pretty” transformation. I had a silicone butt and the most insane push-up bra. They basically sewed me into that dress every day. I had to try not to drink too much water because peeing was not fun! I did the little “snatch” the hairstylist, Vanessa, gave me under my wig. I wouldn’t do it every day, but for an event or if I feel I need a little pick me up, that’s a great trick. You just pull the hair by your temples back really tight.
What are some beauty products you use to take the day off after filming?
I love serums. Cocokind, Naturium, and Tower28 are my favorite skin-care products. I’ll do my routine and before moisturizer, I’ll do a sheet mask over my serums. I also love my Nuface. It definitely helps to sculpt and depuff.
Uglies has a strong message regarding aesthetics. Do you feel that kind of pressure to look a certain way in Hollywood?
I definitely feel pressure. But what the movie and my life experience have taught me is that I’m not obligated to follow the trends or meet the standards that society has set out for us and our bodies. I try to be critical of what I do and ask myself why I do it and if it makes me feel good or if I’m doing it for outside approval. But with social media, it’s hard not to compare and feel like you’re lacking. Self-love and acceptance doesn’t happen overnight, but it is definitely worth the journey.
What are you excited for this fall?
I’m excited to wear layers again and feel cozy. I split time on the East and West Coast. So, on the East Coast, I love when the leaves change and I can go to my favorite coffee shop and read a book. Fall always makes me excited for football and spending time watching games with my friends and fiancé.
Conclusion
Brianne Tju shared her experiences working on the Netflix original film Uglies, discussing the transformative process she underwent for the role of Shay. From her favorite skin-care products to the pressure to look a certain way in Hollywood, Tju opened up about the challenges and realities of being in the industry. With a strong message about self-love and acceptance, Uglies is a must-watch for anyone looking for a thought-provoking film.
