Amanda Seyfried’s ‘Rich Lady Blonde’ Looks Luxe—and It’s Surprisingly Easy to Maintain

Amanda Seyfried is having a major moment in the press between the premieres of The Housemaid and The Testament of Ann Lee, showcasing her wide-ranging talents—nailing eerie scenes and show-stopping musical numbers alike. In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Seyfried shared that one of her favorite parts of The Housemaid was being told she needed “rich lady blonde” hair. “And now I’m addicted. I don’t want my natural [color] to grow out too much because I’m really into this blonde,” she added.

So what exactly is rich lady blonde? Seyfried describes it as two shades too blonde to hide the fact that, “Yeah, I get my hair colored. I’ve got the money to do it.” We’re just as obsessed with the shade as she is, so we turned to her colorist to find out how rich lady blonde came to life.

How Seyfried Got Her ‘Rich Lady Blonde’ Hair

Celebrity hairstylist Julie Fortiz tells us that Seyfried hadn’t colored her hair since Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, meaning she had years of untouched hair to work with. “When Amanda first came in, we started our appointment with someone on FaceTime from The Housemaid production team, and they expressed how she really needed to go for it and look expensive!” says Fortiz. “Amanda is a natural blonde, and she had a mood board that was mostly Sienna Miller, which was a sparkly blonde, but still very tasteful.”

Fortiz painted Seyfried’s hair in thin sections across the entire head, intentionally leaving some of her natural hair visible for dimension. She notes that her background in hand-painted highlights (balayage) made all the difference. “I say hand-painted because a lot of people confuse them. If it’s not open-air painting, it’s not balayage,” she explains. “I never use foils and always get the best results.”
