How to Tie a Voluminous Ponytail

Great Lengths Ambassador, Marc Mena, explains that there are a ton of ways to tie a ponytail that prioritize volume. “One of my favorite options is the high, fluffy ponytail,” he says. “This is a teased high pony with a bit of wave and a strand wrapped around the base. But I’m also a fan of the low, tousled ponytail, which is slightly messy, and parted at the crown with texture and volume.”

According to celebrity hair stylist and creator of Kim Kimble Hair Collection by HairUWear, Kim Kimble, the double-pony is an easy hack for a more voluminous ponytail. “When you gather your ponytail, tease the hair to add body,” she explains. “A great technique to use is a ‘double ponytail,’ which is two stacked ponytails (one on top of the other), and blend them together. It instantly makes your pony look longer and fuller.”

“To tie off the ponytail, I usually use a bungee hooked ponytail holder or a simple elastic that I wrap around the base with some help,” adds celebrity hairstylist and John Frieda Haircare ambassador, DJ Quintero.

Tips for Extra Drama

If you’re looking to maximize the volume in your pony, the key is placement.

“Try dragging your pony up to the highest point on your head (think cheerleader!),” advises celebrity hairstylist and KERASILK ambassador Harry Josh. “This will give you a natural list that wouldn’t show up if the pony was low in the back. Backcombing the hair after it is in the pony and then smoothing hair over the backcomb will also give you that full look.”

And for even more drama, consider a clip-in extension!

“I like using a good volumizer to start the ponytail,” Quintero says. “Start with John Frieda Volume Lift Thickening Spray ($13) at the roots before blow-drying upside down. Backcombing the crown area creates a foundation of support.”

“I also recommend loosening up the look after tying your ponytail by gently tugging at the sections of your ponytail to fluff it out,” Mena says. “You can also curl the ends or create soft waves to add texture and volume.”
