If you’ve been scrolling TikTok for manicure inspiration, you’ve likely already seen ice aurora nails. The look pulls from several of the year’s top nail trends, blending icy tones with layered finishes for a result that feels both modern and eye-catching. “It’s like a fusion of nail art, design and technique all wrapped up into one look,” says Evelyn Lim, chief educator at MiniLuxe’s Paintbox studio.

The trend also aligns neatly with where nails are headed in 2026. Ice aurora nails tap into Pinterest-predicted cool blue shades, feature an iridescent finish similar to Pantone’s Color of the Year, Cloud Dancer, and nod to the intergalactic influences expected to gain momentum in the new year. Keep reading for Lim’s expert tips on how to recreate the icy manicure.

What Are Ice Aurora Nails?

Ice aurora nails go beyond frosty colors blended into a simple aura design. The trend takes inspiration from the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) and is meant to mimic the layered, light-reflecting effect of the natural phenomenon. “The design itself is multi-dimensional and composed of four unique components: magnetic polish, chrome powder, sequins and holographic paper,” says Lim.

Icy shades like cool blue, pearl and silver enhance the holographic finish, giving the manicure its signature glow. The result is a highly dimensional look that blends technique, texture and light.

How to Get the Look

Recreating ice aurora nails takes patience and a handful of tools, but you don’t need to be a professional nail tech to try it. “This trend is all about layering and building on each step to create its unique effect,” says Lim.

Begin with a layer of white polish, followed by a magnetic polish in a cool, icy shade. Use a magnet to pull the shimmer toward the center of the nail, then lightly dust on a pearlescent chrome powder to finish the base layer.

To recreate the reflective glow of the Northern Lights, Lim recommends disco ball sequins for their mirror-like effect. Once applied, add the element that gives the manicure its signature look. “The aurora sticker is what gives the design a true aurora appearance,” she says. Made from transparent holographic cellophane, it adds an iridescent sheen. Cut the material into strips and place them at the center of the nail or scatter them throughout for a more diffused effect.

The final step is sealing everything in. “Encapsulating all three layers with builder or hard gel is important, but it can make the nail feel thick,” Lim notes. Her trick: flip your hand upside down for about 15 seconds while applying the gel to create a smoother finish and subtle apex before curing. Finish with a glossy topcoat for shine. Then it’s glow time.
