Blush is synonymous with spring and summer. Whether it’s a pop of coral or a rush of strawberry, it’s the ultimate warm-weather beauty staple. But if you ask me, finding a good blush for winter is even more important. After all, a punch of color can completely transform your look.
That said, shopping for a blush suited to the colder months can be tricky. Certain formulas can be drying this time of year, and choosing the right shade matters just as much. While bright, bold hues are fun, muted tones with hints of shimmer feel especially seasonally appropriate. Fortunately, the blush category has grown vastly over the last few years. Ahead, we tapped two makeup artists for their top winter blush shades and the formulas that work best as the days get colder.

What to Look for in a Winter Blush
Richer formulas are often needed this time of year to combat winter’s chilly temperatures and cold fronts. While you’re swapping out cleansers and moisturizers, opting for a hydrating blush can be just as helpful. According to celebrity makeup artist and co-founder and CEO of ciele Cosmetics Nikki DeRoest, liquid and cream formulas often contain hydrating ingredients that help keep dryness at bay.
“Soothing ingredients like allantoin are rich in antioxidants and promote a healthy, radiant flush, but can also be perfect for sensitive and acne-prone skin,” she says. Even better, liquid and cream formulas deliver a natural-looking flush with minimal effort. That said, you don’t have to rule out powder blushes entirely—there are plenty of options designed to hydrate the skin while still delivering ample color.
What Colors Are Trending
Winter begs for cozy elements, and that extends to its top blush shades. “This winter, we’re seeing a strong pull toward toasty terracotta and soft brown tones that create a warm flush and feel natural on the skin,” says makeup artist and senior product developer at Beauty Creations Cosmetics, Brenda Orduno. In that vein, these shades can even function like a bronzer, subtly warming the skin with a light kiss of color.
Bold hues offering a more prominent flush will be just as common this season. Rich shades like plum and muted berry add depth and can be used to create a dramatic, seasonal look without going overboard. “When blended, these deeper shades give the cheeks a moody, sophisticated finish that feels perfect for the winter months,” says Orduno.
