TikTok’s Heated Science-Backed Hair-Care Debate Explained

The complexities of Black hair have been deeply misunderstood, and until recently, underrepresented on shelves in major beauty stores. As a young girl with thick, coily hair, I’d shop the aisles of beauty supply stores for products that catered to my hair type. The scenario is common for many Black people who grew up during a time when Black hair care didn’t mesh with mainstream beauty. Decades later, brands and founders are debuting daily, boasting formulas made specifically for natural hair. Today, there are tons of options, but a new trend on TikTok is sparking a heated debate about whether the formulas that paved the way are comparable to those of more mainstream brands.

The conversation began with a creator explaining why certain brands, such as Olaplex and K18, marketed to straight hair types are outperforming Black hair-care products. The reason? According to the clip, these brands are science-based, meaning they use science and technology to develop their formulas as opposed to oils and butters. The post sparked a debate, bringing in some prominent voices in the beauty creator community. In response to the commotion, cosmetic chemist and creator Javon Ford posted his own explanation that put things in perspective. While it’s true brands like Olaplex, K18, Redeken and Pureology are rooted in science, he explains that it’s also their marketing story. Bonding technology is a prime example that proves this for each of these brands. However, when it comes to Black hair-care products, the marketing sticks to a tried and true method, focusing on formulas backed by natural butters and oils.

Natural ingredients like shea butter and coconut oil are ideal for moisturizing and softening curls. They’re designed to hydrate and increase water retention in a hair type prone to dryness and breakage. With many products focusing on this particular issue, the marketing story has remained the same. Given that, a new butter or oiling technique surfaces every couple of years to target an audience of naturally curly textures. But there are Black hair-care brands that’ve consistently championed innovative formulas. Design Essentials, a Black-owned brand, has been doing so for years, and because of that, it was mainly found in salons instead of the beauty aisles. Mizani, a L’Oréal brand targeting Black consumers, is another example. Though their products can now be found in Sephora, purchasing them outside of the salon years ago was unheard of.

As someone whose natural hair goes through the ringer from heat styling and protective styles, I can attest that there are benefits to using technology-advanced formulas. Clarifying shampoos and bonding treatments have helped maintain the health of my curls. They’ve become a staple in my routine, not because they’re science-backed but because they’re created for all hair types. In years past, that wasn’t the case for the products that filled Sephora and Ulta’s hair-care section. Innovation in the category hasn’t just boosted hair health, it’s helped inclusivity. But pitting science-backed formulas against those of Black-focused hair-care brands isn’t helping us move forward. Put simply, finding products that work comes down to being realistic about what you want them to do. As Ford noted, the focus of deeply nourishing brands is vastly different than those aimed to provide results that aren’t inherently natural.
