Can You Overdose on Electrolytes?

When you’re exercising or working in the heat, you lose essential electrolytes through sweating, such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. These minerals help regulate bodily functions, including nerve and muscle functioning. Dehydration occurs when there is not enough water in the body to dilute toxins. If not treated properly, electrolyte imbalances can become fatal.

In this viral TikTok, a woman consumed an excess amount of Liquid I.V., an electrolyte supplement powder that people commonly use for hydration during heavy physical activity. Unfortunately, Liquid I.V. may promote using their products for everyday well-being, which may lead to too much electrolyte consumption. As depicted in this video, it resulted in complications, shortness of breath, palpitations, swelling in hands, and blurred vision, followed by an ambulance arrival.

Consuming high amounts of electrolytes may bring out an electrolyte imbalance, often unseen until its complications and sometimes, leading to permanent issues. For some people who need medical guidance or supplements might find an excess to take them outside their medication levels.
